Science (PCM) — your options

❓A 4-year undergraduate degree in engineering. It is the single most popular choice for PCM students. You pick a branch (specialisation) and study theory plus practical labs. Top branches to consider: CSE (Computer Science) — software, AI, and tech jobs; IT (Information Technology) — similar to CSE, more application-focused; ECE (Electronics and Communication) — chips, telecom, embedded systems; EE (Electrical Engineering) — power systems, electrical design; ME (Mechanical Engineering) — machines, manufacturing, automobile; Civil Engineering — construction, infrastructure, urban planning; Chemical Engineering — process industries, oil and gas, pharma; Biotech (Biotechnology) — biology meets engineering, pharma and research roles.

👤Students who enjoy problem-solving, math, and want a structured degree with strong placement prospects. CSE/IT suits those who like computers; ME and Civil suit those who prefer hands-on physical systems.

➡️Software engineer, data analyst, core engineer, product manager, government engineer (PSU jobs via GATE), or higher studies (M.Tech, MBA, MS abroad).

📜JEE Main (for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs — around 10 lakh students appear, only top ~2% get good NITs), JEE Advanced (for IITs — extremely competitive, top ~1.5 lakh from JEE Main qualify to appear), State CETs like MHT-CET, KCET, WBJEE, UPSEE. Private colleges accept JEE Main or their own tests.

❓A 5-year professional degree in architecture — the design and planning of buildings, spaces, and infrastructure. It blends creativity with technical drawing, mathematics, and structural knowledge. Very different from engineering in daily work.

👤PCM students who have strong spatial thinking, enjoy drawing or design, and are interested in how buildings and cities are built and planned. You must also have studied Mathematics in 12th (mandatory requirement).

➡️Architect (private practice or firm), urban planner, interior designer, government architecture roles (PWD, CPWD), M.Arch or planning studies abroad.

📜NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) conducted by Council of Architecture — tests drawing ability and aesthetic sensitivity. JEE Main Paper 2 is also accepted by NITs for B.Arch.

⏱️5 years. Internship is built into the final year.

❓A prestigious route to join the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force as an officer. After clearing the exam and SSB interview, you study at NDA in Pune for 3 years (a joint degree with JNU). It is a fully residential programme with a stipend — so you study and earn at the same time.

👤Students who have a strong sense of discipline, physical fitness, and a desire to serve the nation. Age limit applies: you must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years at the time of applying.

📜NDA & NA Exam conducted by UPSC — twice a year (NDA I and NDA II). Written exam followed by SSB (Services Selection Board) interview. Mathematics paper is specifically from PCM syllabus.

➡️Deck Officer, Marine Engineer, Radio Officer — with promotions leading to Captain or Chief Engineer roles. Salaries in USD or EUR, often ranging from 3-15 lakh per month at senior levels.

📜IMU CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test) for B.Sc Nautical Science or B.E. Marine Engineering. Private institutes like HIMT, MERI also have their own entrance tests. DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) is a shorter 1-year pre-sea training option.

⏱️3-4 years of degree or diploma, then a cadetship (training contract at sea) of 12-18 months before your first sailing contract.

❓After completing 12th with PCM, you can do a lateral entry directly into the second year of a 3-year Polytechnic Diploma in Engineering. This means you finish in just 2 years instead of 3. Polytechnic diplomas are government-recognised, skill-based, and affordable. After the diploma, you can also do lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech — skipping the first year.
